Wasting Assets, Taxing Questions

Is Fine Wine Exempt from Capital Gains Tax, and Would That Be Reason Enough to Invest?

Is fine wine exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT)? A deciding question for most investors entering this market. As the Financial Times has reported, fine wine can benefit from HMRC’s Wasting Assets Exemption (1). Table wines have a short life and will eventually turn to vinegar, making them CGT exempt, fortified wines such as Port can age indefinitely and are usually not CGT exempt. Fine wines can be aged to a point, but even the finest wines will eventually become undrinkable, on that basis, Fine wine is exempt from capital gains tax, if approached with expert support.

Following the 2024 budget the UKs tax to GDP ratio is โ€œthe highest since OECD records began in 2000โ€ (2), and UK taxpayers will see their tax burden reach the highest point since the Second World War (3) , no wonder there has been so much buzz around this investment that delivers tax-free profits. In this current economic climate, is being CGT exempt reason enough to invest in fine wine?

With a benchmark growth of 300% over the past 20 years (4), record-breaking fine wine auctions generating billions of pounds over the same period4, and products growing in value by over 100% in a single year, investors at all levels are watching wine โ€“ and rightfully so โ€“ the strength of this market is too lucrative to ignore. Tax efficiency aside, a well-managed wine portfolio can both be profitable and particularly enticing for those with a taste for the finer things.

Yet the question still stands, is being CGT-exempt enough to justify investing in fine wine?

Many alternative investments are CGT-exempt; Art, cars, clothes, watches and whisky, like fine wine, are considered wasting assets and therefore have tax efficiency. Where wine truly stands out from the rest are the innumerable benefits of working with one of the most loved consumable assets on the planet.

As it stands, fine wine has matured from a niche passion investment of the ultra-wealthy and well-connected, with 28% of high-net-worth investors holding fine wine, 93% of whom held wine primarily for enjoyment (Barclays Ledbury research). As of 2023 wine is represented in the portfolios of 40% of high-net-worth investors with 96% of wealth advisors surveyed expect demand to increase even further, ahead of watches (86%) and luxury handbags (80%) in second and third place respectively (7), indicating interest that goes beyond that of passion.

Tax implications aside, working with the right company can unlock all fine wine has to offer: Your brokers will deliver advice tailored to your personal financial goals, have the expertise to pick the right products, the network to get great prices and the foresight to devise the best liquidation strategy. The benefits of wine investment keep adding up:

  • Strong market growth: A robust 146% market growth over the past decade outperforming gold, the FTSE 100, S&P 500 and almost all other alternative investments (6).
  • Global marketplace with emerging opportunities: Regional Diversification offers New World investment opportunities along with the established European markets (7), offering both stable growth and opportunities for big wins.
  • Tax efficiency through bonded storage: Wines stored in bond are exempt from VAT and alcohol duty, making it a fully tax efferent investment. government-regulated, bonded facility. There are no early seller fees, no annual storage fees for 5 years and no commissions on profits.
  • Finite supply with every vintage release: Natural scarcity and exclusivity when dealing with the top wines.
  • Maturation in the bottle and diminishing availability: Fine wine improves with age and is drunk throughout its life; Holding the right product at the right time can mean substantial returns.
  • Increasing liquidity: There are more buyers and sellers than ever before contributing to a dynamic investment market, Fine wine auctions at Sothebyโ€™s saw the number of bidders increase by nearly 400% and the number of new bidders by almost 500%, from 2013 to 2022 (8).
  • Climate change increasing demand: Vines are the most weather-sensitive of all agricultural crops; a changing climate makes it more difficult to make good wine, and makes historic vintages more sought after (9).
  • Straightforward entry, full management: Cult and Boutique clients acquire their assets through an upfront price fully inclusive of 5 years of storage, insurance and management as a standard, Dedicated portfolio manager, with a dedicated portfolio manager overseeing their holdings
  • Strategic exit: How and when wines are sold have a considerable influence on their sale price and speed of the transaction. Online and prestige auctions, direct to consumer, trade to other investors, broker sale, all presenting their own unique benefits.
  • Owning the assets outright: Outright ownership gives investors full control of their portfolio and adds a layer of security that is essential when entering any new market.

While the allure of CGT exemption acts as a gateway, the vast spectrum of benefits associated with fine wine investments makes it a compelling choice for investors. Whether theyโ€™re seeking tax advantages, long-term growth, or impressive returns, the role of merchants and brokers will be paramount.
