Burgundy 150 price index chart compared with gold, oil and stocks – CB Wine

Historical performance (Jan 2004 – Jan 2024)

THE INVESTMENT CASE

A market built on scarcity, not sentiment.

Each vintage is produced to a fixed, unrepeatable quantity. As global demand continues to rise, that finite supply is what underpins fine wine's long-term investment case.

As a tangible asset, fine wine has historically shown low correlation to equities and other traditional markets, offering a genuine way to diversify away from conventional holdings.

Rebased at 100 since January 2004, our Burgundy 150 index reached close to 900 at its 2022 peak, well ahead of the FTSE 100 and S&P 500 over the same period.

The Fundamentals

What Sets Fine Wine Apart

Fine wine has a distinct set of characteristics that set it apart from other asset classes, rooted in the fundamental mechanics of supply and demand.

Finite Supply & Scarcity

Each vintage of a fine wine is produced in a fixed quantity that can never be replicated or increased.

Tangible Asset

A physical asset with intrinsic value, supported by clear provenance and securely tracked through your personal portfolio.

DIVERSIFY & HEDGE

A tangible asset that has historically resisted correlation with equities and traditional investment markets.

Generally treated as a wasting asset, most gains fall outside Capital Gains Tax, with no duty or VAT while stored in-bond.

Where the World's Wines Are Sourced

From the industry's most established estates to exciting emerging regions, our sourcing spans Old World tradition and New World ambition.

Bordeaux

Home to five First Growths and over a century and a half of formal classification, Bordeaux remains one of the deepest, most liquid markets in fine wine investment.

Burgundy

Burgundy's Grand Cru vineyards are divided into some of the smallest, most fragmented parcels in the wine world, where producer and plot matter as much as the appellation itself.

Champagne

From Grande Cuvée's reserve-wine philosophy to Salon's single-vintage rarity, Champagne offers one of the broadest ranges of investment styles of any fine wine region.

California

While other regions compete on vineyard scarcity, California's most collectible wines are also rationed through allocation, meaning getting on the list can matter as much as the wine itself.

Tuscany

Home to the Super Tuscans and some of Italy's most collectible reds, Tuscany combines centuries of family winemaking with a willingness to reinvent itself entirely.

Piedmont

Piedmont's finest Barolo and Barbaresco Riservas aren't made every year by design, only when the vintage is judged worthy, making each declared release a genuine event.

Rhône

Home to some of France's oldest continuously farmed vineyards, the Rhône produces powerful, long-lived Syrah from single, terraced hillside plots, some farmed by the same family for centuries.

South Australia

South Australia's oldest Shiraz vines can't be recreated at any price, meaning the wines made from them become harder to replace with every vintage that passes.

Kent

Because Gusbourne uses only its own estate-grown fruit, production can't simply be scaled up to meet demand the way a producer buying in grapes could, a genuine structural limit on supply.

Ribera del Duero

Único isn't released until the estate itself decides it's ready, often a decade or more after harvest, meaning buyers acquire wine that has already done much of its ageing under expert control.

What's the minimum amount I need to invest?

There's no strict minimum, entry typically starts from £5,000–£10,000, though £10,000-£20,000 or more gives access to higher-tier wines and a properly diversified portfolio.

Every bottle purchased through Cult & Boutique is held at London City Bond's Eton Park facility in Burton-upon-Trent, under continuous security surveillance.

Yes. Your wine is insured while in storage and in transit, with additional independent cover in place for wines that exceed the standard policy value.

We offer a range of exit routes, including private auction, peer-to-peer sale, international trade, and retail sale through our Uncorked marketplace.

HMRC generally treats fine wine as a wasting asset, sometimes referred to as a wasting chattel, meaning most gains fall outside the scope of Capital Gains Tax. Wine stored in-bond is also free of excise duty and VAT. There are exceptions, so we'd always recommend speaking to a qualified tax adviser about how this applies to you.
