Home / Investment / Harlan Estate
Harlan is one of the defining allocation-led Napa cult estates. H. William Harlan founded the estate in 1984 after acquiring the first raw hillside land above Oakville, with the explicit ambition of creating a California estate with the long-term identity and continuity of a European First Growth. The 1990 vintage became the first official Harlan Estate release, following experimental wines that were never commercially sold.

Harlan Estate occupies 240 acres in the western hills of Oakville, with roughly 40 acres under vine. The hillside vineyards rise from about 225 to 1,225 feet and combine volcanic and sedimentary geology. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The first plantings began in 1985, followed by experimental wines from 1987 to 1989 that were never commercially released. The 1990 vintage became the first official Harlan Estate release, and the winery subsequently developed an allocation model that helped define the modern Napa cult-wine category.
