Home / Investment / Château Mouton Rothschild
Mouton Rothschild combines the economics of a First Growth with an additional layer of cultural collectability: its artist labels make individual vintages visually distinctive. Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased the property in 1853, though it remained only a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification. After decades of campaigning by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Mouton was promoted to First Growth in 1973, the only change ever made to the top rank.

The estate lies in Pauillac on gravelly rises suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, with roughly 90 hectares under vine. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and sits close to Lafite in the northern Médoc.

Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased Château Brane-Mouton in 1853 and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild. The property remained a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification despite its reputation, a status that became a defining point in the estate's history.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild transformed Mouton in the twentieth century, introducing château bottling in 1924 and commissioning artist-designed labels from 1945. After decades of campaigning, Mouton was promoted to First Growth in 1973, the only change ever made to the top rank of the 1855 red-wine classification.
