Helping Investors Build Long-Term Value

EN PRIMEUR

Invest In Wine Before It's Bottled.

It lets you secure wine while it's still ageing in barrel, often at a price advantage before wider release.

Buying Wine While It Is Still at the Estate.

En Primeur is the practice of buying wine directly from the estate while it's still maturing in barrel, before it's bottled and physically released, most commonly associated with Bordeaux, though the practice has spread to other fine wine regions too.

Estates release a portion of each vintage this way to generate early cash flow and gauge demand, while buyers gain the chance to secure their allocation before prices adjust to reflect the finished wine's reputation.

THE FUNDAMENTALS

From Vintage To Physical Release.

Harvest

Grapes are picked and fermentation begins, typically between late August and October depending on the vintage and region.

Barrel Ageing & Critic Tasting

Wines rest in barrel for months while critics taste early samples and publish their first scores and impressions.

En Primeur Release

The estate releases pricing and allocations, typically around a year after harvest, opening the buying window to the trade.

Reservation & Payment

Buyers secure their allocation and pay in full, reserving stock long before it's bottled or physically available.

Bottling & Delivery

Around two years after harvest, the wine is bottled and becomes available for delivery, storage, or onward sale.

Worth Understanding

You Invest Before Taking Physical Delivery

Buying En Primeur means paying for wine that doesn't yet physically exist in bottle. It's a real commitment based on reputation, critic scores, and the estate's track record, not a finished product.

This is a different kind of commitment to buying wine that's already bottled, stored, and ready to trade.

Secure allocations of sought-after wines before they reach the open market.

Critic Scores

Early Barrel samples are scored by leading critics before bottling begins.

Price Advantage

Often priced below the wine's eventual market value once bottled.

Limited Allocation

Access to small production runs that may never be available again.

Frequently Asked

Understanding En Primeur

En Primeur has its own language and timeline, separate from buying already-released wine. Here are a few questions we're often asked about how it works.

What does "En Primeur" actually mean?

The en primeur meaning is simple: buying wine directly from the estate while it's still maturing in barrel, before it's bottled and physically released.

It carries different risks, since you're buying based on early samples and reputation rather than a finished, tasted product. Your portfolio manager will only recommend it where it genuinely fits your strategy.

Bottling and delivery typically follow around two years after harvest, though this varies by estate and vintage.

Your reservation is held with the estate, and once bottled, the wine moves into secure storage at Eton Park under your name.

Bordeaux en primeur is the best-known market, though the practice has spread to other fine wine regions in recent years.
