Home / Investment / Giacomo Conterno
Giacomo Conterno is a benchmark traditional Barolo producer whose investment market is led by Monfortino. The family's modern wine story is conventionally dated to 1908, when the Conternos ran a tavern in San Giuseppe near Monforte d'Alba and produced wine to serve and sell. Giacomo later developed the long-aged Barolo style that became associated with the family, later transformed by the 1970s acquisition of Cascina Francia.

The estate's modern vineyard base is centred on Serralunga d'Alba, especially Francia, Cerretta and Arione. These limestone- and marl-rich sites give Nebbiolo structure and longevity. The acquisition of Cascina Francia in the 1970s was transformative because it shifted Conterno from dependence on purchased fruit toward estate-controlled vineyards.

Monfortino emerged as the estate's exceptional Riserva and became a reference point for traditional Barolo. Under Giovanni and later Roberto Conterno, the winery expanded its estate holdings while maintaining long macerations, large cask ageing and a highly selective approach to whether Monfortino is produced.
